Una de las bandas referencia del thrash metal de la Bay Area, TESTAMENT, ha vuelto con su nuevo álbum, “Para bellum”, en lo que me ha venido a sugerir una reinvención del sonido de los americanos, ya que se perciben influencias de subgéneros más oscuros, como el blackened o el death metal, pero sonando claramente a TESTAMENT.
La incorporación en sus filas del batería Chris Dovas me ha parecido que ha añadido un extra de velocidad en ciertas partes, como en los blast beats o en las transiciones, rejuveneciendo el conjunto.
“Para bellum” toca tanto el palo más agresivo o puramente thrash, pero también ofrece una dinámica distinta con su balada “Mean to be”, que sinceramente me descolocó, pero para bien, al ser una sorpresa que no esperaba. Por lo tanto, es un disco con muchos cambios de dinámica, que es de agradecer desde el punto de vista del oyente, ya que hay discos que son tan tralleros que generan cierto aturdimiento al escucharlos.
Gracias a trabajos como éste, TESTAMENT dejan claro por qué son una de las bandas fundadoras de la historia del thrash.

One of the leading Bay Area thrash metal bands, TESTAMENT, is back with their new album, “Para Bellum,” which strikes me as a reinvention of the American band’s sound, as influences from darker subgenres, such as blackened or death metal, can be heard, but it still clearly sounds like TESTAMENT.
The addition of drummer Chris Dovas to their ranks seems to me to have added extra speed in certain parts, such as in the blast beats or transitions, rejuvenating the whole.
“Para bellum” plays both the more aggressive and purely thrash style, but also offers a different dynamic with its ballad “Mean to be,” which honestly threw me off, but in a good way, as it was a surprise I didn’t expect. Therefore, it is an album with many dynamic changes, which is appreciated from the listener’s point of view, as there are albums that are so thrash-heavy that they cause a certain amount of dizziness when listening to them.
Thanks to works like this, TESTAMENT make it clear why they are one of the founding bands in the history of thrash.
