A estas alturas de su carrera, ya va siendo hora de quitar el lastre a las suecas THE GEMS de su anterior etapa en THUNDERMOTHER.
“Year of The snake” marca que la banda ha elegido su propio sonido que poco o nada tiene que ver con su previa vida musical. En este disco se percibe claramente un enfoque mucho más melódico que me ha llenado mis oídos desde el primer tema. La voz de Guernica es el cebo, y las guitarras de Mona son el anzuelo que te hace no soltar el disco desde que empieza a rodar, que evoca a grandes bandas del hard rock melódico como EUROPE.
Es verdad que el destello de la primera impresión se va difuminando a medida que avanzamos en los cortes del álbum, pero no pienso que sea por un declive en la calidad de las composiciones, sino por ser todos los temas de un corte similar. En todo caso, entran como un cuchillo caliente en mantequilla.
THE GEMS demuestran que no son un coletazos de otra banda, sino que han construido su propio nombre y tienen proyección para un largo recorrido.

At this point in their career, it’s about time for the Swedish band THE GEMS to shed the baggage from their previous stint in THUNDERMOTHER.
“Year of The Snake” marks the band’s decision to forge their own sound, one that has little to nothing to do with their previous musical past. This album clearly showcases a much more melodic approach that has been a treat for my ears from the very first track. Guernica’s vocals are the bait, and Mona’s guitars are the hook that keeps you glued to the album from the moment it starts playing, evoking great melodic hard rock bands like EUROPE.
It’s true that the spark of that first impression fades as we move through the album’s tracks, but I don’t think that’s due to a decline in the quality of the compositions, but rather because all the songs are of a similar style. In any case, they go down like a hot knife through butter.
THE GEMS prove that they aren’t just a spin-off of another band, but have built their own name and have the potential for a long-lasting career.
