BORKNAGAR fue una de esas bandas que descubrí durante el confinamiento, en aquellos momentos oscuros de incertidumbre en el que la pantalla del portátil era la ventana a lo que había fuera de las cuatro paredes de mi casa, y mira que tienen años de carretera a sus espaldas. El disco con el que los descubrí fue el “True North” de 2019 y fue uno de los que más escuché por aquel entonces.
Hay que matizar que BORKNAGAR sería lo que denominamos una superbanda que aglutina a miembros de bandas referencia del metal extremo nórdico, como GORGOROTH, IMMORTAL, ENSLAVED o ULVER.
Ahora han vuelto con “Fall”, en el que los noruegos vuelven a repartir su fusión de black metal, metal progresivo y folk metal por medio de sus 8 cortes.
De primeras, al empezar a escuchar el tema que abre el álbum, “Summits”, me pareció que BORKNAGAR se habían volcado totalmente al black metal, pues el inicio no da tregua y enseguida descarga con una atronadora ráfaga de blast beast y guturales que poco tienen de progresivo, pero poco a poco el sonido va encauzándose más al progresivo y al folk nórdico, como en “Nordic anthem”, si bien el ramalazo black metalero está más presente en este trabajo que los inmediatamente anteriores, como ocurre en temas como “Afar”, “Unraveling” o “Northward”. Quizás el single que ya sonó en el programa de Juanma (“Moon”) puede generar confusión, pues en ese corte concreto apenas hay toques extremos.
La voz de Andreas Hedlund sigue imprimiendo una personalidad especial al sonido del grupo, ya que se sale de los estándares de este tipo de grupos, siendo más melódica de lo que nuestro oído espera. Reconozco públicamente mi debilidad por cantates que se salen de los patrones habituales.
Para los seguidores de BORKNAGAR, este disco les seguirá gustando al mantener la esencia de toda su carrera, con un giro más marcado al black metal, pero sin perder la senda progresiva.

BORKNAGAR was one of those bands that I discovered during lockdown, in those dark moments of uncertainty in which the laptop screen was the window to what was outside the four walls of my house, even when they have years of carrer behind them. The album with which I discovered them was 2019’s «True North» and it was one of the ones I listened to the most at that time.
It should be remarked that BORKNAGAR should be call a superband that joins members of reference bands of the Nordic extreme metal, such as GORGOROTH, IMMORTAL, ENSLAVED or ULVER.
Now they are back with «Fall», in which the Norwegians once again spread their fusion of black metal, progressive metal and folk metal through its 8 tracks.
At first, when I started listening to the opening track of the album, «Summits», it seemed to me that BORKNAGAR had turned completely to black metal, because the beginning gives no rest and immediately unloads with a thunderous explosion of blast beast and gutturals that have nothing progressive at all, but little by little the sound becomes more and more progressive, and Nordic folk, as in «Nordic anthem», although the black metal branch is more present in this work than in the immediately previous ones, as it happens in themes like «Afar», «Unraveling» or «Northward». Perhaps the single already played in Juanma’s program («Moon») can generate confusion, because in this particular cut there are hardly any extreme touches.
Andreas Hedlund’s voice continues to imprint a special personality to the sound of the band, as it is out of the standards of this kind of bands, being more melodic than what our ear expects. I publicly admit my weakness for singers who are out of the usual patterns.
For the followers of BORKNAGAR, this album will keep the essence of their whole career, with a more marked turn to black metal, but without losing the progressive path.
