Dentro de la escena del metal y del rock europeo, Francia lleva ya unos cuantos años siendo la cuna de muchos grupos de altísimo nivel, lo cual se puede escuchar fácilmente en los distintos programas de HörnsÜp, abarcando un espectro muy amplio de subgéneros. Baste citar grupos como GOJIRA, NIGHTMARE, ONLAP o DAGOBA, para que os hagáis una idead de lo que digo.
Si bien no son una banda de reciente creación y nueva para mí, FRACTAL GATES ha vuelto a cruzar después de muchos años en mi vida en la redacción musical con un nuevo disco, “One with dawn” que sigue la estela del “The light that shines” de 2018.
Para quien no haya tenido la suerte de haber escuchado antes a FRACTAL GATES, apuntar que las dos líneas maestras que definen el sonido de los franceses son: un protagonismo abrumador de las líneas melódicas en las guitarras con un tinte post rock, y una evocación a lo espacial y al cosmos.
Respecto a lo primero, resulta muy curioso e innovador que en el momento de recordar las canciones que acabas de escuchar del disco, apenas eres capaz de destacar un riff de la parte rítmica, sino que en seguida viene a tu mente el arreglo o la frase que hacía la guitarra en la parte solista.
La alusión que su música hace al Universo empasta a la perfección con sus portadas, pudiendo llegar a usarlas como un fondo visual en el que sumergirse a la vez que uno escucha “Shinning fall”, “Halflife” o “When the distance paints us”.
Como elemento diferenciador de este trabajo con los precedentes, las voces en “Into the unkown” y “Earthbound” salen del death metal melódico para tomar un cariz más hardrockero que, personalmente, me ha gustado muchísimo pues generan un contraste respecto al resto.
Aviso para navegantes interplanetarios espaciales: ya apenas me quedan huecos para el top de fin de año…

Within the European metal and rock scene, France has been for some years now the cradle of many top level bands, which can be easily heard in the different programs of HörnsÜp, covering a very wide spectrum of subgenres. Suffice it to mention bands like GOJIRA, NIGHTMARE, ONLAP or DAGOBA, to give you an idea of what I mean.
While they are not a newly formed band and new to me, FRACTAL GATES has crossed over again after many years in my music writing life with a new album, «One with dawn» which follows in the wake of 2018’s «The light thatshines».
For those who have not been lucky enough to have heard FRACTAL GATES before, to point out that the two master lines that define the sound of the French are: an overwhelming protagonism of the melodic lines in the guitars with a post-rock tinge, and an evocation of the spatial and the cosmos.
Regarding the former, it is very curious and innovative that at the moment of remembering the songs you have just listened to from the album, you are hardly able to highlight a riff of the rhythmic part, but immediately comes to your mind the arrangement or the phrase made by the guitar in the solo part.
The allusion that their music makes to the Universe matches perfectly with their covers, being able to use them as a visual background in which to immerse oneself while listening to «Shinning fall», «Halflife» or «When the distance paints us».
As a differentiating element of this work with the precedents, the vocals in «Into the unkown» and «Earthbound» leave the melodic death metal to take a more hard-rocker turn that, personally, I have liked very much because they generate a contrast with respect to the rest.
