Ya sabéis que en Hörns Üp tratamos especialmente bien al stoner rock al ser uno de nuestros estilos favoritos, tanto en los programas semanales como en los Rock, Blues and Beers de Moy. Pues en uno de los últimos tuvimos ocasión de escuchar a los MAX BOOGIE OVERDIRVE con su “Stoned again”.
MAX BOGGIE OVERDIRVE nace como un proyecto de Max Boogie y Drop Dee que pretendía recuperar el sonido del rock en su vertiente más stoner de la década de los 70. Si te gusta FU MANCHU u ORANGE GOBLIN, te gustarán MAX BOOGIE OVERDRIVE.
La propuesta de esta banda afincada en Los Ángeles mantiene ese sonido crudo y nada procesado de los amplificadores a válvulas, pero lo que me ha llamado la atención es el dinamismo de sus composiciones, ya que el stoner quizás peca a veces de ritmos demasiado cadenciosos, pero aquí hay mucha velocidad incluso en temas que como “Freakazoid”, que empieza siendo muy pesado para acabar con un galope rítmico. Composiciones como “Van Boggie” o “Demonaire” sí pueden mantener ese sabor del stoner más ortodoxo con la distorsión y las voces rudas.
“Stoned again” es un muy prometedor álbum de debut de un proyecto que esperamos que nos depare más discos de este nivel como buenos amantes de stoner que somos.

You already know that at Hörns Üp we treat stoner rock especially well as it is one of our favorite styles, both in our weekly programs and in Moy’s Rock, Blues and Beers. In one of the last ones we had the opportunity to listen to MAX BOOGIE OVERDIRVE with their “Stoned again”.
MAX BOGGIE OVERDIRVE was born as a project of Max Boogie and Drop Dee that tried to recover the sound of rock in its stoner side of the 70s. If you like FU MANCHU or ORANGE GOBLIN, you will like MAX BOOGIE OVERDRIVE.
The proposal of this band based in Los Angeles keeps that raw and unprocessed sound of tube amps, but what has caught my attention is the dynamism of their compositions, as stoner maybe sometimes sins of too cadenced rhythms, but here there is a lot of speed even in songs like “Freakazoid”, which starts being very heavy to end with a rhythmic gallop. Compositions like “Van Boggie” or “Demonaire” can keep that more orthodox stoner flavor with distortion and rough vocals.
“Stoned again” is a very promising debut album from a project that we hope will bring us more albums of this level as good stoner lovers that we are.
