Después del anuncio de su salida de MOTLEY CRUE hace dos años, y cuando casi todos nosotros sabemos de su delicado estado de salud, al menos para un servidor fue toda una sorpresa la edición de este ‘The Other Side of Mars’.
Para los que esperaban un disco similar a lo conocido de su ex banda, se habrán quedado muy sorprendidos, tanto para bien como para mal, y es que el título del disco habla por sí solo.
Ya hemos podido leer críticas tan buenas como malas. Para mí, a parte de la pequeña decepción que me provocó ‘Broken on the Inside’, soy de los que está disfrutando y mucho del resultado global del disco.
Ya con la inicial ‘Loyal to the Lie’ demuestra que no quiere saber nada del pasado al menos en lo referente a lo musical, con una potente base rítmica liderada por el gran Ray Luzier y Chris Collier a la batería y bajo respectivamente, que al igual que en ‘Ain’t Going Back’ y ‘Right Side of Wrong’ mezclan a la perfección lo mejor de un grunge más pesado a lo ALICE IN CHAINS con un hard más clásico acompañado de estribillos pegadizos.
Con ‘Alone’ rebajan un poco las revoluciones, con un soberbio Paul Taylor de la banda WINGER a los teclados, llegando a recordar perfectamente a bandas com SIXX: AM …(!!!!), al igual que en la bonita y sencilla ‘Memories’, para lucimiento de Jacob Bunton a la voz.
Con ‘Killing Breed’ y ‘Undone’ llegamos para mí al punto álgido del plástico, donde destaca el para mí desconocido Brion Gamboa a las voces, y sobretodo con los sobresalientes arreglos orquestrales y teclados a cargo de Paul Taylor. Y como momento anecdótico tenemos ese final con toques blues en la forma de ‘LA Noir’, el cual, no creo que pase a la historia como una de las mejores interpretaciones instrumentales.
Un notable resultado final, con un sonido contundente pero sin perder ese toque comercial que tanto ha caracterizado la carrera del mítico productor Michael Wagener, sobretodo a medidados de los noventa, y del que me alegro siga en activo. Con estos créditos, ¿qué podía salir mal?

After the announcement of his departure from MOTLEY CRUE two years ago, and when almost all of us are aware of his delicate state of health, at least for me the release of ‘The Other Side of Mars’ was a surprise.
For those who were expecting an album similar to what was known from his former band, they will have been very surprised, both for better and for worse, and the title of the album speaks for itself.
We have already been able to read both good and bad reviews. For me, apart from the small disappointment that ‘Broken on the Inside’ caused me, I am one of those who is enjoying the overall result of the album.
Already with the opening ‘Loyal to the Lie’ shows that they don’t want to know anything about the past at least musically, with a powerful rhythmic base led by the great Ray Luzier and Chris Collier on drums and bass respectively, which as in ‘Ain’t Going Back’ and ‘Right Side of Wrong’ perfectly mix the best of a heavier grunge ALICE IN CHAINS style with a more classic hard rock accompanied by catchy choruses.
With ‘Alone’ they lower the revolutions a bit, with a superb Paul Taylor from the band WINGER on keyboards, perfectly reminding us of bands like SIXX: AM …(!!!!), as well as in the beautiful and simple ‘Memories’, for Jacob Bunton on vocals.
With ‘Killing Breed’ and ‘Undone’ we reach for me the high point of the album, where the unknown Brion Gamboa stands out on vocals, and above all with the outstanding orchestral arrangements and keyboards by Paul Taylor. And as an anecdotal moment we have that ending with blues touches in the form of ‘LA Noir’, which I don’t think will go down in history as one of the best instrumental interpretations.
A remarkable final result, with a strong sound but without losing that commercial touch that has characterized the career of the legendary producer Michael Wagener, especially in the mid-nineties, and I’m glad he is still active. With these credits, what could go wrong?
