Más de medio siglo después, los padres fundadores del hard rock, DEEP PURPLE, siguen demostrando que la veteranía no está reñida con la inspiración en “Splat!”, su vigesimocuarto álbum de estudio, que no pretende competir con sus grandes obras como “Machine Head” o “In Rock”, pero sí confirma el extraordinario momento creativo que vive la formación desde su alianza con el productor Bob Ezrin.
Puede que uno de los grandes protagonistas de esta obra sea Simon McBride, el cual se consagra como un excelente músico y compositor, no haciéndonos añorar a otras grandes hachas que han militado en la banda británica en su historia.
Ian Gillan, a sus 80 años, ya no busca alcanzar las notas imposibles que marcaron una época, sino transmitir carácter. Su voz ha evolucionado hacia un registro más grave y expresivo, lo cual es una acierto sobre todo si se acude a uno de sus conciertos, ya que de nada sirve hacer algo en estudio que luego no sea posible igualar en vivo.
“Splat!” combina el hard rock clásico con pequeños guiños al blues, al rock progresivo e incluso a ciertos desarrollos casi psicodélicos, particularmente con los pasajes en los que Don Airey toma la rienda de la canción a los teclados.
“Splat!” no alcanza el estatus de sus obras inmortales, pero sí se sitúa entre los mejores trabajos publicados por la banda en este siglo.

More than half a century later, the founding fathers of hard rock, DEEP PURPLE, continue to prove that experience is no obstacle to inspiration on “Splat!,” their twenty-fourth studio album, which doesn’t set out to compete with their masterpieces like “Machine Head” or “In Rock,” but does confirm the extraordinary creative momentum the band has enjoyed since teaming up with producer Bob Ezrin.
Perhaps one of the standout figures on this album is Simon McBride, who establishes himself as an excellent musician and composer, leaving us with no reason to miss the other great guitarists who have played with the British band throughout its history.
Ian Gillan, at 80 years old, no longer seeks to hit the impossible notes that defined an era, but rather to convey character. His voice has evolved toward a deeper, more expressive register, which is a wise choice—especially if you attend one of his concerts—since there’s no point in doing something in the studio that can’t be matched live.
“Splat!” combines classic hard rock with subtle nods to the blues, progressive rock, and even certain almost psychedelic elements, particularly in the passages where Don Airey takes the reins of the song on keyboards.
“Splat!” doesn’t quite reach the status of their immortal masterpieces, but it certainly ranks among the best albums released by the band this century.
