Hoy os traigo un material que no ha pasado a día de hoy por el podcast de Hörns Üp, pero que creo que para aquellos que se atrevan con el metal progresivo y sus temas largos y complejos, les va a gustar.
Desde las antípodas, los australianos CALIGULA’S HORSE han lanzado su sexto trabajo de estudio titulado “Charcoal grace” a finales del mes de enero con el sello Inside Out Music, en el que puede que sea el mejor que han sacado en su discografía.
Como os podéis hacer a la idea, no estamos ante temas simples y de estructuras manidas, sino que el hecho de ser capaz de memorizar la partitura completa ya es, de por sí, un motivo para recomendar este álbum. Los pasajes transitan entre la extrema delicadeza a riffs mucho más agresivos, que hacen un perfecto contrapunto que te mantiene atento a cada compás. En general podemos hablar de un disco oscuro en su mayoría, pero que también tiene hueco para la luminosidad como en “Golem”, una locura de tema.
Todos los miembros de la banda hacen un todo, sin que las voces de Jim Grey sean las que marquen la tónica de los temas, sino que se integra y marca líneas melódicas como si fuera un instrumento más, con un timbre que inevitablemente nos lleva a los PAIN OF SALVATION. Por lo tanto, la musicalidad es el elemento clave para abordar este disco, hasta el punto que incluso los arrastres de los dedos sobre las cuerdas de la guitarra (eso que tu profesor te dijo que no hicieras nunca) que escuchamos en “III: Vigil” tienen su sentido y aportan al conjunto de la composición, lo cual es una muestra más de genialidad.
Como eje central del álbum, están los cuatro temas que hablan sobre “conexión, alienación y las formas en que la humanidad actúa bajo presión” tal y como dice la propia banda en las entrevistas que han dado. Al margen de la temática, son temas que te embelesan con los falsetes de la voz y ese sonido de guitarra tan característicos del post-rock con gran presencia de los chorus y el delay.
“Charcoal grace” es la muestra de la evolución y madurez acaparada por CALIGULA’S HORSE desde sus inicios en 2011, y que les ha hecho crear un disco de referencia entre los últimos publicados en el mundo del metal progresivo.

From the antipodes, the Australians CALIGULA’S HORSE have released their sixth studio work entitled «Charcoal grace» at the end of January on the Inside Out Music label, in what may be the best they have released in their discography.
As you can get the idea, we are not facing simple themes and trivial structures, but the fact of being able to memorize the full score is, in itself, a reason to recommend this album. The passages go from extreme delicacy to much more aggressive riffs, which make a perfect counterpoint that keeps you attentive to each measure. In general we can speak of a dark album in its majority, but that also has room for luminosity as in «Golem», a crazy song.
All the members of the band make a whole, without Jim Grey’s vocals are the ones that set the tone of the songs, but he integrates and marks melodic lines as if he were just another instrument, with a timbre that inevitably takes us to PAIN OF SALVATION. Therefore, musicality is the key element to approach this album, to the point that even the dragging of the fingers on the guitar strings (that thing your teacher told you never to do) that we hear in «III: Vigil» make sense and contribute to the whole composition, which is another sign of genius.
As the centerpiece of the album, there are the four tracks that talk about «connection, alienation and the ways humanity acts under pressure» as the band itself says in the interviews they have given. Apart from the subject matter, they are songs that enrapture you with the falsetto vocals and that guitar sound so characteristic of post-rock with great presence of chorus and delay.
«Charcoal grace» is the sample of the evolution and maturity achieved by CALIGULA’S HORSE since their beginnings in 2011, and that has made them create a reference album among the last ones released in the world of progressive metal.
