Desde la costa este de los Estados Unidos, MEGA COLOSSUS nos trae su nuevo trabajo “Showdown”, un disco de heavy metal con sabor a antaño con mucha velocidad y frescura.
Nada más empezar nos llega un chorro de velocidad en los riffs en “Fortune and glory” que se mantiene a lo largo de los seis temas del álbum, teniendo todo ellos su colofón con las melodías pegadizas de los estribillos.
En este trabajo no vamos a encontrar exclusivamente sonidos del heavy más arraigado y convencional, sino que también hay temas que casi rozan el thrash como “Grab the sun”, dando un punto trepidante al tema. Esos riffs mezclados con las melodías de las guitarras armonizadas son una muestra de cómo juntar los dos subgéneros de manera muy resultona.
También se perciben guiños a bandas clásicas del rock progresivo como KANSAS en “Wicked road”, que nos recuerda inevitablemente al mítico “Carry on my wayward son” con un sonido más contemporáneo y duro.
Aunque la voz de Sean Buchanan no resulte prodigiosa, sí tiene un timbre que le viene como anillo al dedo a la banda, sin ser muy melódica pero tampoco agresiva. Creo que la banda tiene el mérito de, sin ser unos virtuosos, saber sacar el máximo rendimiento a lo que saben hacer, brindando un disco que entra muy bien en una primera escucha y que va ganando puntos a medida que uno le da unas vueltas más.
Aunque es un disco de corta duración, creo que eso es un punto a su favor, pues gracias a eso mantiene ese punto de frescura en todo momento.

From the east coast of the United States, MEGA COLOSSUS brings us their new work «Showdown», a heavy metal album with a taste of yesteryear with a lot of speed and freshness.
Right from the start we get a blast of speed in the riffs in «Fortune and glory» that is maintained throughout the six tracks of the album, all of them having their climax with the catchy melodies of the choruses.
In this work we are not going to find exclusively sounds of the most rooted and conventional heavy, but there are also themes that almost touch the thrash as «Grab the sun», giving a thrilling point to the theme. Those riffs mixed with the melodies of the harmonized guitars are examples of how to join the two subgenres in a very successful way.
We also perceive echoes of classic progressive rock bands such as KANSAS in «Wicked road», which inevitably reminds us of the mythical «Carry on my wayward son» with a more contemporary and harder sound.
Although Sean Buchanan’s voice is not prodigious, it has a timbre that fits the band like a glove, without being very melodic but not aggressive either. I think the band has the merit of, without being virtuosos, knowing how to get the most out of what they know how to do, providing an album that enters very well on a first listen and that is gaining points as one gives it a few more spins.
Although it is a short album, I think that is a point in its favor, because thanks to that it maintains that point of freshness at all times.
