Mucho se ha hablado y se está hablando estos últimos días de este ‘The Mandrake Project’, tanto para bien como evidentemente para mal, y es que estamos delante de una nueva entrega de Bruce, del que todos conocemos sobradamente su carrera en solitario y de discos como ‘Balls to Picasso’, ‘Accident of Birth’ o ‘The Chemical Wedding’, los cuales pusieron un listón quizás demasiado alto hasta para su propio creador.

Muchos estaremos de acuerdo en admitir que éste no es su mejor disco, del que creo que uno de sus ‘defectos’ ha sido a la hora de elegir el orden de los temas, con un inicio algo irregular para gusto de un servidor, y del que se necesita más de una escucha para entrar de lleno en esta nueva historia que nos presenta el vocalista de IRON MAIDEN.

El giro importante llega de la mano de ‘Resurrection Man’, un tema con un incio muy a lo viejo oeste y un más que sorprendente cambio con un riff que te recordará a BLACK SABBATH, para seguir con la épica ‘Fingers in the Wounds’, con una sencilla pero efectiva base de piano a lo largo del tema. La fiesta continua con una bonita intro de flauta junto con la poderosa voz de Bruce para adentrarnos de lleno en ‘Eternity Has Failed’, tema que podría haber firmado la doncella de acero perfectamente.

En ‘Mistress of Mercy’ llega el que para mí es uno de los mejores cortes del plástico, con un soberbio Roy Z junto a un Bruce muy en forma donde nos regalan un buen tema de hard rock directo, con un genial estribillo y que en su conjunto nos hace retroceder a tiempos de su obra ‘Accident of Birth’.

A destacar también el acertado final con un par de medio tiempos en la forma de ‘Shadow of the Gods’ y sobretodo ‘Sonata (Immortal Beloved)’, que se convierte para mí en otra de las favoritas del disco; un tema con el que Bruce y Roy consiguen crear una atmósfera y una emotividad que te harán muy difícil no cerrar los ojos y disfrutar.

Lo dicho, en mi opinión, un buen y recomendable disco.

Much has been said and is being said these last days about this ‘The Mandrake Project’, both for good and obviously for bad, and we are in front of a new delivery of Bruce, of whom we all know his solo career and albums like ‘Balls to Picasso’, ‘Accident of Birth’ or ‘The Chemical Wedding’, which set a bar perhaps too high even for its own creator.

Many will agree in admitting that this is not his best album, of which I think one of his ‘defects’ has been when choosing the order of the songs, with a somewhat irregular start for the taste of a server, and that it takes more than one listen to enter fully into this new story that presents the vocalist of IRON MAIDEN.

The important turn comes with ‘Resurrection Man’, a song with a very old-west beginning and a more than surprising change with a riff that will remind you of BLACK SABBATH, to continue with the epic ‘Fingers in the Wounds’, with a simple but effective piano base throughout the song. The party continues with a beautiful flute intro along with Bruce’s powerful voice to enter fully into ‘Eternity Has Failed’, a song that could have been signed by the maiden of steel perfectly.

In ‘Mistress of Mercy’ comes what for me is one of the best tracks of the album, with a superb Roy Z along with a very fit Bruce where they give us a good song of direct hard rock, with a great chorus and that as a whole makes us go back to times of his work ‘Accident of Birth’.

Also noteworthy is the successful ending with a couple of mid-tempos in the form of ‘Shadow of the Gods’ and especially ‘Sonata (Immortal Beloved)’, which becomes for me another favorite of the album; a song with which Bruce and Roy manage to create an atmosphere and an emotion that will make it very difficult for you not to close your eyes and enjoy.

That said, in my opinion, a good and recommendable album.
