En el decimocuarto Rock, Blues and Beers, Moy dedicó la portada del programa a Jack J. Hutchinson, un guitarristas y compositor londinense bastante desconocido para la mayoría. El tema “Road to Hell” me pareció una canción de blues con cierto tono sureño que me recordó al guitarrista Scott McKeon por su cadencia en la forma de tratar las guitarras rítmicas. Después Moy me insistió en que escuchara el disco íntegro, y si Moy te lo dice, es por algo.

Pues mi sorpresa llegó cuando escuche el primer tema del álbum “Constellations” con una guitarra rítmica atronadora y de sonido muy gordo que en nada se parecía a lo escuchado en el programa, y me gustó especialmente por eso, por no esperármelo y ser tan diferente del single que ya había escuchado. Pues el patrón de “Constellations” de hecho es el que más se prodiga en “Battles”: riffs muy duros del corte de THE BLACK CROWES con unos estupendos estribillos y una impecable interpretación a la guitarra y a la voz de Jack J. Hutchinson. De hecho, temas como “Bullets” o “Overdrive” me cuesta decir que puedan ser de un guitarrista de blues. Quizás cortes como “Running on empty”, “Love is the Law” sí enlazan más con esta idea del blues más tradicional que tenemos todos.

Las dotes como guitarrista de Jack J. Hutchinson se muestran más en la parte rítmica, sin que los solos lleguen a resultar excesivos, ni muchos menos, de hecho hay solos que casi pasan desapercibidos dentro de la partitura, siendo más un arreglo que no una parte que pretenda ganarse el protagonismo.

Que la Telecaster que muestra en la portada no os engañe, “Battles” es un discazo de rock contundente y tremendo.

In the 14th Rock, Blues and Beers podcast, Moy dedicated the cover of the program to Jack J. Hutchinson, a London guitarist and composer quite unknown for most of us. The track «Road to Hell» came across to me as a blues song with a certain southern twang that reminded me the guitarist Scott McKeon for its cadence in the way he treats rhythm guitars. Afterwards Moy insisted to listen to the whole album, and if Moy tells you that, it’s for a reason.

Well, my surprise came when I listened to the first track of the album, «Constellations» with a thunderous rhythm guitar and a very heavy sound that was nothing like what I had heard in the program, and I liked it especially for that reason, for not expecting it and for being so different from the single I had already heard. The pattern of «Constellations» is in fact the most common in «Battles»: very hard riffs from THE BLACK CROWES cut with great choruses and an impeccable performance on guitar and vocals by Jack J. Hutchinson. In fact, songs like «Bullets» or «Overdrive» are hard to say that they could be by a blues guitarist. Maybe songs like «Running on empty», «Love is the Law» are more in line with this idea of the more traditional blues that we all have.

Jack J. Hutchinson’s talents as a guitarist are shown more in the rhythmic part, without the solos becoming excessive, in fact there are solos that almost go unnoticed within the score, being more an arrangement than a part that pretends to earn the prominence.

Don’t let the Telecaster on the cover trick you, «Battles» is a tremendous and forceful rock album.
